Christopher R. Smith - Technical Writing

Technical Writing

Writers should be taken for granted. It's true.
You're not in the document production business. Your customers don't ask for it, your employees don't ask for it, and you make no money from it. You provide a product or service and all of your time and expertise must go into making it the best possible, and anything that distracts you from that goal is a liability.
But ultimately it's expected, isn't it? It is a commodity that is conspicuous only in its absence or imperfection. It is intended to be taken for granted.
Just like a good writer should be.

You shouldn't spend time managing your documentation. You shouldn't spend time developing your own training. You shouldn't spend time on the phone answering questions about how to use your product. Above all, your product, your service, should not be delivered late because the documentation wasn't ready in time.
A truly good technical writer is one you don't even have to think about.
